Sam Ryder Remembers Dave Grohl’s Incredible Invitation From Roger Taylor

Sam Ryder recently spoke with Absolute Radio’s Ben Burrell at the Isle of Wight Festival 2023. During the conversation, he mentioned a phone call he received from Roger Taylor regarding Dave Grohl’s request to perform with Queen. The singer, who performed with the band at Taylor Hawkins’ Tribute Concert in September, was filming for the show ‘Trainspotting’ when he received the following message from Taylor’s team: “We were flying in the Spitfires with our phones in airplane mode.” So I missed a phone call, which was obviously really essential. And as I landed, I was approached and asked, ‘Did you get the phone call from someone?’ ‘No, what were you talking about?!’ I exclaimed. Then it came through again, this time from Roger Taylor’s staff, asking, “Are you available on Saturday?” Because Dave Grohl has asked whether you want to play with Queen, and Queen is really interested in doing so!’ I almost burst into tears. I can’t convey how much that meant to me in the small amount of time we had together.” Ryder went on to discuss Queen’s influence on him and lauded the band, saying:

“(Queen) were the very reason that myself and so many others picked up a guitar, picked up a microphone, and just following in their footsteps, just being a part of that trail that they blazed is an honor to all of us.” To have the opportunity to perform ‘Somebody To Love’ on the same piece of ground – I know it’s a new stadium, but it’s the same sort of coordinates – that George Michael sung at Freddie (Mercury’s) memorial event (in April 1992). That was the last time the band was present.” He also mentioned Taylor Hawkins and her tribute performance: “It meant so much to me, and I just went out there and sang my absolute head off and loved every second and just celebrated Taylor’s life loudly with everyone in that stadium because he was an enigma and just the greatest because he inspired people – and continues to inspire people – with his attitude, charisma, and character.” You can see Taylor Hawkins playing the drums now; he doesn’t just play them. He’s beaming. It’s as if he has to do it because there is nothing else in the world he’d rather do. And that is crucial for newcomers to music to see.”

Roger Taylor allegedly suggested that Sam Ryder perform ‘Somebody to Love’ alongside the Queen members. While presenting the artist on stage at the concert, Dave Grohl stated: Tonight we have a very special visitor who you might not expect. We didn’t do it. When we were discussing the next song to play, we weren’t sure who we should invite to come up and sing it with us, and I believe Roger had the idea. Roger showed us a video of someone singing along to this song, and after one phone call, this individual said he would come here tonight to sing it with us. So, will you kindly greet the most incredible vocalist? Come up and sing with us tonight, Sam Ryder.” Ryder later collaborated with another member of the band. In May, he and Brian May collaborated on a new song called ‘Fought & Lost.’
