Jon Landau said in January 2023 that 95% of ‘Avatar 3’ had already been filmed, and the production team was currently filming scenes for ‘Avatar 4’. Avatar fans learnt in June that while they would be able to return to Pandora in Avatar 3, the wait will be longer than expected. The film was originally scheduled to be released in 2024, with two sequels following in 2026 and 2028. Everything has now been pushed back. Avatar 3 will be released in December 2025, with the other films following in 2028 and 2031, respectively. So, what’s the big deal? The issue isn’t one of filming; the majority of Avatar 3 has already been shot. How much of ‘Avatar 3’ has already been shot? Avatar 3 won’t hit theaters until December 2025, although the production is nearly finished. At the very least, filming for the film is nearly complete. Producer Jon Landau spoke with Collider in December 2022 about the series. He said that 95% of the third film was already shot. The final 5% has also been recorded. Avatar 3 isn’t the only project in the franchise that’s making headway. Landau also revealed to the publication that the first act of Avatar 4 had already been shot. While he did not address Avatar 5, we do know that the last installment script has already been done. The majority of ‘Avatar 3′ was shot prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Fans were taken aback by the news that Avatar 3’s release date had been pushed back. The news of the new launch date broke around the time Hollywood closed down.
In May 2023, the Writers Guild of America went on strike. In July, SAG-AFTRA followed. While it would be simple to conclude that the modified release dates are due to the strikes, this does not appear to be the case. All future Avatar projects’ writing was completed a long time ago. In fact, the scripts for the series’ fourth and fifth installments were finalized before filming for Avatar 3 was concluded. Almost majority of the filming for Avatar 3 had already been done when the strikes began. So, why is the film being delayed? If the strikes did not pose problems for Avatar 3, why was the release date pushed back by a year? While the notice did not explain the problem, there could be a few possibilities. According to Reuters, Jon Landau said on Twitter that the filmmakers simply needed more time.
Many people assume that the delay is due to the editing and special effects that must be added to the film. Avatar’s extraordinarily vivid and intricate universe necessitates a significant amount of post-production work. It is understandable that a team would require more time to guarantee that the product is ready for the big screen.
