Corey Taylor Explains Why He Likes Maynard James Keenan’s Tool Boring

Corey Taylor recently confessed to Steve O why he believed Tool was dull. The musician and the former Jackass star were discussing their favorite live bands when Steve mentioned Tool. So, upon hearing that, Taylor explained why he didn’t get Maynard James Keenan’s band: “Watching Tool live is an acquired taste for me because they’re so dialed in that it’s almost like listening to the album.” And as a punk kid growing up, that’s not always the case.” He went on to explain what ‘bored’ him about the band’s live shows: “They’re incredible at what they do, but when I go to a show, I also want to see something.” And I become bored since they aren’t as visibly active. And I despise saying it. It’s not because they’re uninteresting. I’m bored because I’m used to sh*t like Napalm Death, where Barney [Greenway] walks up walls and f*cking jumps on people’s heads.” Slipknot’s frontman then took a more upbeat tone, even praising Tool’s ‘onstage harmonies’ and suggesting that he give them another chance:

“However, what [Tool] does is so… Danny Carey is, after all, one of the finest f*cking drummers of all time. They have such a natural chemistry as a band. They transport you there. And they’ll extend anything for minutes on end, just to draw you in. It’s insane. Maybe I should go see them right now… I think I’d appreciate it more now that I’m older than when I was younger.” So, while Corey was eager to give Tool another opportunity, some rock fans had been debating whether Tool was ‘boring’ or ‘overrated’ for years on various social media channels. At one point, the matter even became a TikTok meme, which you can see here.
