Brian May Explains the Perplexing Situation Surrounding Queen’s ‘We Will Rock You’

Queen recently posted a video on their YouTube page in which they discussed how their studio recording sessions evolved into live performances. What Brian May imagined would happen with the song when he wrote ‘We Will Rock You’ became a reality. May elaborated: “Well, you kind of hope they’ll evolve in real time.” We Will Rock You, for example, was clearly crafted with the goal of eliciting audience engagement. And, I’m delighted to announce, everything worked out.” He later explained why the music got unintelligible: “But it’s different in person. For starters, the original recorded version lacks drums. It’s turned into a drum spectacular, which is fine, and the audience sings along. The stomping and applauding has turned into a completely confusing situation because some people will go bump bump punch, while others will go boom, boom, punch, and who knows? “I’m not sure what I’m talking about anymore.” May described how he comes up with music ideas like follows:

But it doesn’t matter since the physicality is present, they sing, and it’s clearly a mainstay. ‘We Will Rock You’ and ‘[We Are The] Champions’ will always be with us. So, yeah, there are moments of revelation. ‘Oh, we’ll be OK.’ I enjoy waking up in the middle of the night and thinking to myself, ‘Oh, you know what? ‘We could do it,’ you know? And you walk in, you say, ‘Can we try this?’ and then you say, ‘Actually, yeah, that could work, that could very much work’.” Fans of the band, according to May, contributed to the writing of ‘We Will Rock You’ with their enthusiasm. During a tour, after the band was done with their performance, the audience sung a song back to them, which inspired ‘We Will Rock You’ and ‘We Are The Champions’. In an early interview, the guitarist stated:

“They went off after we did an encore.” Instead of just clapping, they sang ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone,’ by Elvis Presley, to us, and we were completely taken aback. It was a very emotional experience, and I believe these chants have something to do with it.” Since its debut, ‘We Will Rock You’ has received multiple certifications and topped the OCC’s ‘UK Singles’ list.
